Whole Wheat Fried Dough with Apple Dipping Sauce is pretty decadent. I’m not going to lie.
Now, I know I made them with whole wheat flour, but that still does not make this a health food. It simply makes it a once-in-a-while food.
The dough is wonderful when you break it in half and scoop up a huge bite full of the apple dipping sauce. But don’t limit your dipping to just my suggested sauce. Salted caramel, chocolate sauce or strawberry sauce would all be wonderful dipping sauces for fried dough!
If you need to make them a little extra decadent, you could always roll them in sucanat after removing them from the frying oil.
Or, you could make these into a savory appetizer. They’d be great for dipping into cheese fondue! Spinach dip and artichoke dip would also be excellent dipping sauces.
Whole Wheat Fried Dough with Apple Dipping Sauce
- 1/4 recipe whole grain no-knead bread dough
- 1/2 cup applesauce
- 2 tablespoons maple syrup
- 1 heaping teaspoon apple pie spice
For the fried dough:
- Fill frying pan with 1/2 inch canola oil.
- Divide 1/4 recipe master flat bread dough into 2 equal pieces. Roll each piece into an 18 inch long log. Cut each log into 1 1/2" pieces.
- Roll each piece of dough into a ball.
- Heat canola oil to 375 degrees. Drop balls of dough into the hot oil and fry until golden brown, about 3 minutes per side.
- Remove from oil and drain on paper towels. Serve hot with apple dipping sauce.
For the apple dipping sauce:
- In a small saucepan, combine applesauce, syrup and apple pie spice. Stir together and heat until warm. Serve warm with fried dough.
