Can’t keep the kitchen clean? These are the top reasons why!
Let’s Start With Why Do You Need To Keep Your Kitchen Clean?
Keeping your kitchen scrubbed and washed is important for your family’s health and safety.
I’m sure you are already aware your counters, sink, and cabinets are a breeding ground for bacteria and germs.
If that bacteria spreads to your food, you can contract a foodborne illness resulting in gastrointestinal distress, abdominal pain, fever, and chills.
I’ve experienced food poisoning, and that right there is a major motivation to keep a spotless kitchen.
Another reason to have a tidy kitchen is that food, food spills, and food waste attracts insects and rodents.
Once mice and roaches find your kitchen, it can be really hard to keep them out.
It is actually easier to keep a kitchen sanitary than it is to try to get rid of unwanted pests that are attracted by a mess.
So now you know the reasons to keep your kitchen spic-and-span, so what is preventing you from having the immaculate kitchen of your dreams?
Here are the 10 Reasons Why You Can’t Keep Kitchen Clean:
#1 You suffer from “Flat Surface Syndrome”
Flat Surface Syndrome means you see any open, empty space as a place to set stuff down instead of having an organized place for them.
For example, mail gets set down on the counter and starts to pile up.
If this describes you, schedule an organization day and use hooks, bins, baskets, and/or containers to find a more permanent place for your stuff.
#2 You Have More Stuff Than Space
Do you find yourself reluctant to put something away?
This is a dead giveaway that you have more stuff than your space can neatly hold.
If you are having to balance, squish, or squeeze, to put something away, it is time for a reorganization and, perhaps, a yard sale.
It might not be fun to declutter, but the end result is always worth it.
#3 Your Dishwasher Doesn’t Get Emptied BEFORE Your First Cup of Coffee
I’m only half kidding here.
One thing I know is true – every day brings new dishes.
If the dishes in your dishwasher are clean, but you don’t empty it before breakfast, all the breakfast dishes are going to stack up next to the sink.
When that happens, you get behind before the day is even started.
Emptying your dishwasher while the coffee brews sets your day up for clean kitchen success.
#4 YOU *THINK* THE MESS IS BECAUSE OF YOUR FAMILY
While it is true that the kitchen is the busiest room in the house, and that everyone contributes to the mess, I have a hard truth I need to tell you.
The mess in the kitchen never goes away – even when your kids move out.
Kitchens are located in the heart of the home, and they get the most use in the house, so a mess there is inevitable.
There are cleaning systems that will help you keep the kitchen clean with minimal effort.
#5 YOU HAVEN’T FULLY UTILIZED WALL SPACE
Having enough space is the number one complaint I hear from people who can’t keep their kitchens clean.
While you may have maxed out the cabinet and drawer space, have you maxed out the wall space? There are lots of ways to utilize the wall space under, over, and around your cabinets.

#6 THE SHELVES IN YOUR CABINETS HAVEN’T BEEN ADJUSTED
This is such a quick and easy win when looking for additional space in your kitchen.
Adjust your shelves to fit your needs.
With any room you create by adjusting shelf height, you can purchase expand-a-shelf products that will double your storage space.
#7 YOU HAVE STORAGE CONTAINERS WITH NO LIDS
Do not hang on to storage containers with no lids.
Or the reverse – don’t hang on to lids that don’t belong to a container.
Getting rid of storage containers without lids will simplify your life!
Not to mention, it will save you so much time. No more hunting for a lid that isn’t there.
#8 YOU ARE FIGHTING IT INSTEAD OF PLANNING FOR IT
What do I mean by fighting it?
Kitchens are used for more than just cooking.
Crafts, homework, bill paying,… all sorts of activities take place in the kitchen.
You need to plan for it.
This is another instance in which having baskets, bins, or storage containers for those activities will help to corral the mess.
It is impossible to wipe down the kitchen counters if you can’t even find them!
#9 YOU THINK THE KITCHEN HAS TO BE CLEAN BEFORE YOU GO TO BED
How many times have you heard this? A million? It just isn’t true.
I have a new rule for you: The kitchen has to be clean before breakfast.
Now, if you have dishes that will stink up the kitchen if they sit overnight, take care of those for sure.
And if you have a pest problem, you definitely need to clean up any food that will attract them.
Otherwise, clean the kitchen when YOU are more productive.
Night owls should clean at night, early birds should clean in the morning.
I’m an early bird. I have more energy then, so cleaning in the morning is easier.

#10 YOU THINK THE KITCHEN WILL TAKE LONGER TO CLEAN THAN IT DOES
Once you’ve established a cleaning routine, you can get your kitchen clean in 15 to 20 minutes.
Fifteen minutes is not that much time and the reward is so worth the effort.
If you are finding cleaning the kitchen is taking you longer, make sure you act on the 10 items I outlined above.
