How do bloggers make money? I get asked that question a lot!
Blood, sweat, and tears. That’s how.
I wish I kid but I’ve been blogging for 5 years, and I still find myself asking: Can I really make a living by blogging?
I know I’m not alone in this. We all want the answer to how do bloggers make money!
When I went searching for answers on what I could reasonably expect to be making based on my pageviews, the only articles I found reported blogger income from sites that get 1 million pageviews or more a month.
My site gets nowhere near that many pageviews, but I still make money.
Since I couldn’t find a lot of information on how other sites with comparable pageviews made their money, I thought I would be the one to be transparent and crack the door into my income.
In this post I will share with you exactly how much I earn and what my income streams are.
But first, let me introduce you to my blog.
I started The Natural Green Mom in 2010 as an organic coupon blog. I knew we would be going from two incomes to one, and I wanted to be able to help the family grocery budget without comprising the healthy foods we eat.
After about 2 years of running coupon posts and grocery store match-ups, I was burnt out. My blog just wasn’t fun for me anymore.
The problem was, I spent 2 years posting deals – not evergreen content. All that work was temporary and no longer exists on my site. As far as my current income is concerned, I consider those wasted years.
About three years ago I started focusing more on green living on a budget. And that’s what you’ll find on my site today.
The nitty gritty on how I run this site:
Although I’ve had my blog for 5 years, I have never dedicated myself to it full time. In fact, I’d say I probably only spend 15 hours/week on my blog.
My pageviews currently average 100,000 per month.
While I have paid for some VA work in the past, I am currently doing 100% of the work involved in running this blog.
HOW DO BLOGGERS MAKE MONEY
This is a summary of how I made money off my blog for one month. My pageviews were 106,667 for the month.
Ad Network Revenue
I pulled this graph off of Google analytics. It shows what device people use when visiting my site.
See the large blue area? That’s the mobile users percentage. Almost 64% are using a mobile device when visiting The Natural Green Mom.
Why is this important? Check out my advertising income:
Padsquad Mobile Ads – $498.17
Google AdSense – $88.71
RhythmOne – $21.26
Since adding Padsquad mobile ads to my site, I’ve had a huge jump in ad revenue.
My goal for 2016 is to consistently reach 100,000 pageviews so I can apply to a larger ad network and hopefully increase my ad revenue further.
My focus for affiliate marketing is to write evergreen content where an affiliate link is appropriate. A good example of this is my article 6 of the Best Sources for Free Kindle Downloads.
If you read it, you will see that 90% of the information I’ve provided is just that – free information. There is only one affiliate link in that article.
(BTW – Since my business is registered in the state of CO, I can’t be an Amazon affiliate. Any Amazon links I provide are not affiliate links.)
That article was published over 2 years ago – and I still make money off that one little affiliate link.
My goals when I include an affiliate link are:
1. Provide useful, evergreen content
2. Make sure the offers are legitimate and cost nothing to the reader
3. Use a tool like Tailwind to repeatedly pin the article so I can continue to make passive income
Here are the affiliate websites I use and the income I earned from each one in a month:
Centerpoint Media – $1.24
ShopHer Media – $245.17
Escalate Network – $92.27
Linkshare – $7.00
I didn’t make a lot from Centerpoint Media or Linkshare, did I? But here’s the deal, those sums came from evergreen posts I wrote over 2 years ago, so this is totally passive income for me. I’ve made money off those posts every single month since I’ve written them.
Passive income is one of my blogging goals.
I also make money every month off the Ebates blogger affiliate program. It’s a site I use, so I promote it.
Ebates Blogger Referral Progam- $133.00
By the way, since I am a smaller website, sometimes I can’t get into affiliate programs but I still want to be able to promote a product on a website.
That’s how I much I make in a month and how I do it.
Questions? Comments? Recommendations? I’d love to hear them all!
