The Best Homemade Sweet Tea Recipe

The Best Homemade Sweet Tea

Do you watch Duck Dynasty? Tonight is the premier of season 3!

My favorite character to watch is Uncle Si. Uncle Si is a sweet tea fanatic. He carries it with him wherever he goes.

Now, I was raised by a Southern woman, and she always has a glass of iced tea with her. One of my favorite memories is of my daughter, at age three, pointing to a glass of tea and saying, “Isn’t that Grandma Joan’s? She’s gonna want that.” By three years old she already knew: to know my mom is to know that she loves tea.

Maybe that is why I’m obsessed with knowing what sweet tea Uncle Si drinks. In fact, for months I’ve been tweeting Uncle Si in hopes that he would share his sweet tea recipe with me.

Unfortunately, Uncle Si has never responded. I’m left only imagining what is in that plastic cup and jug he carries.

And actually, I probably don’t really want to know. What if he buys that high fructose corn syrup overly sweetened junk with added caramel coloring and something called “gum acacia”?

My heart would break. I like to think of him drinking a traditional glass of classic homemade sweet tea. Preferably lovingly made by Kay.

Tonight is the premiere of Duck Dynasty, and if you watch, you know you need to have a glass of sweet tea ready. And since Uncle Si hasn’t shared his recipe, I’m going to share mine!

The Best Homemade Sweet Tea Recipe

  • 2 cups boiling water
  • 5 black tea bags
  • 2 to 4 tablespoons honey
  • 4 cups ice

  1. Pour boiling water into a large, heat-proof pitcher.
  2. Stir in 2 to 4 tablespoons of honey - or to taste. Stir until honey dissolves.
  3. Add the tea bags. Allow to steep 5 minutes. Remove tea bags and make certain to press out all tea.
  4. Add ice to pitcher. Allow ice to cool tea, then serve.

It really is that simple to make the best homemade sweet tea.  So mix up a pitcher and enjoy!

  1. How many servings is this?

  2. Shannon says:

He made a comment that he gets up every morning and brews his tea for the day.

  3. True Southern sweet tea is more syrup than tea, lol. I don’t like it THAT sweet, but a couple tbs of honey doesn’t seem like it would be enough… I make mine (for a gallon) with 5 tea bags and 1 1/4 c sugar. It’s delicious! My Granny taught me how to make sweet tea, so I stick with that. I might give this a try, though. It would be a nice flavor change to use honey.

  4. Tina, LOL! You nailed it – Southern Sweet tea definitely is more syrup than tea! I love that you make your granny’s recipe. The honey definitely has a different flavor. Fun to mix it up every once in a while. Thanks for commenting! Andrea

  5. Shannon, Really? Uncle Si makes his tea every am? Oh gosh. Now I have to get his recipe! 😉 Thanks! Andrea

  6. Hi Tanya, I get 5 to 6 servings out of my sweet tea – it depends on how much ice I pour it over! 🙂 Andrea

  7. Jackie Rockey says:

Hi! I just read an interview on AE website with Korie….Willie’s wife. Someone had asked her for Si’s sweet tea recipe. She replied that it isn’t really sweet tea….its what they refer to as bitter tea. She said its just unsweetened tea that he brews fresh every morning. She said she grew up drinking real sweet tea but all of them had swapped over to unsweetened except Jase’s wife and that she like hers half and half. I have no idea why Si would call it sweet tea if its bitter tea…lol! I have drank real sweet tea since I was a toddler…since I am from Middle TN. They put that in baby bottles! Lol! But recently have converted over to using honey due to health benefits. Its still delish…my fav drink!

  8. Jackie! You sooooo totally made my morning with this insiders information to Uncle Si’s tea! I’m kinda shocked. I was sure it would be a true, Southern sweet tea. And I love your comment about sweet tea in the bottle. 🙂 Andrea

  9. Hi there-
I just found this article in which the author talks about meeting Si and Si’s tea recipe is given to him.
From the article “Uncle Si, as always, was a hit with everyone. He spoke about the real reason he has a beard. He said he shaved every day for the 24 years he served in Vietnam. He said after that, he threw away the razor, Jack! He’s also much taller I think in person than he comes off on the show. When I shook his hand, his hands where huge! He also revealed his iced tea recipe and that his wife makes it for him everyday.

3 family sized Lipton tea bags to one quart water. Microwave for 6 minutes. Pour over ice. Drink jack.”

    Hope that helps you out!

  10. Cori, I would have sworn Si drank sweet tea! Thanks for the info. Loved it! Andrea

  11. Cori… I am from Mississippi and your recipe is spot on. You just need to add two cups of sugar to that to make it truly southern sweet tea 😉
