9 Secrets to Shopping Trader Joe’s

9 Secrets to Shopping Trader Joe's

Do you have a Trader Joe’s in your area? They offer a unique selection of groceries at competitive prices.

I love to shop there because I’m always discovering something new.

However, there are a few secrets you need to know before you shop a Trader Joe’s.

#1 – Trader Joe’s claims all it’s products are Non GMO with no artificial colors or flavors or preservatives. However, you won’t find the Non GMO project certification on any of it’s packages.

If you want to know exactly what standards they use when sourcing their products, they have it all spelled out on their company website.
There are no GMOs when shopping Trader Joe's

#2 – Trader Joe’s does not offer sales. Ever.

That means you get their lowest price without having to have a loyalty card, a digital app or coupons! This guarantees hassle free shopping every day.

#3 – You can use manufacturer coupons at Trader Joe’s.

While most of the products you find at Trader Joe’s are private label, they do sell brands like Udi’s, Earth Balance, Bob’s Red Mill, and Oregon Chai.

Before you head out, consult the current printable coupons, and make sure you know where to find organic coupons that you can use.

#4 – Trader Joe’s blooms are a bargain!

Blooms are a bargain when shopping Trader Joe's

If you are looking for fresh flowers for an occasion, a gift, or even for everyday, Trader Joe’s has a great selection of in season flowers at incredibly low prices.

At Christmas, the $10 boxwood wreath and $6 poinsettias are a Pinterest lovers dream! 😉

# 5 – Watch the pricing on fruit!

Fruit is priced by the piece when shopping Trader Joe's.

Some of the fruit at Trader Joe’s is priced by the piece – not the pound! Bananas at $0.19 each are a bargain. However, apples are priced by the piece too! This can be confusing for those of us who are used to paying by the pound.

#6 – You can sample ANYTHING!

There is always a sample station set up in the store that samples a feature product.

However, if you want to try ANYTHING in the store before you buy it, all you have to do is ask! A store employee will assist you.

#7 – If you don’t like something, you can take it back.

This is true of anything you buy in the store! If you get home and something you purchased does not meet your expectations, you can return it for a 100% refund!

#8 – Bring your own bags and you could win a free gift card!

Bring your own bags when shopping Trader Joe's.

When you are checking out, be sure to bring your own bags. Then, ask the cashier for a ticket to enter the weekly drawing.

Fill out your ticket and drop it in the box on the way out, and you could win a free Trader Joe’s gift card!

#9 – Stock up on greeting cards for only $0.99 each!

Trader Joe’s has an excellent selection of beautiful greeting cards for only $0.99 each! I like to have several cards on hand for every occasion so I’m never without a card.

Trader Joe’s offers competitive prices that rival those of Whole Foods. I did the price comparison. And they offer a good selection of healthy snack items I like to buy.

What do you like about shopping Trader Joe’s?

Which is Better: Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s?

Which is better: Whole Foods or Trader Joes? A price comparison

What would you say if I asked you, “Which is better: Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s?”

Most likely, you have an opinion. Perhaps you like Whole Food’s bulk bin selection. Or maybe you are a fan of Trader Joe’s marinated meat selection.

But at the end of the day, how does each store compare on price?

While both stores are known for having healthy, organic food, Trader Joe’s is known as a budget retailer, whereas Whole Foods Market is known as the “Whole Paycheck.”

An investigation into how their prices compare was in order.

I wanted to take a look at prices on the foods commonly found on everyone’s healthy shopping list.

To make the comparison fair, I shopped exclusively for the store brands: Whole Foods 365 or Trader Joe’s. I also purchased everything organic – with the exception of the oranges and bananas.

Whole Foods vs Trader Joes

Which is Better: Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s?

Organic Old Fashioned Oatmeal
Whole Foods 365 $3.00
Trader Joe’s $2.49

Organic Coffee
Whole Foods 365 $5.99
Trader Joe’s $7.99

Organic Large Eggs
Whole Foods 365 $4.49
Trader Joe’s $4.19

Organic Plain Yogurt
Whole Foods 365 $3.39
Trader Joe’s $3.69

Whole Wheat Bread
Whole Foods 365 $2.99
Trader Joe’s $2.49

Organic Unsweetened Applesauce

Whole Foods 365 $2.99
Trader Joe’s $2.79

Organic Peanut Butter
Whole Foods 365 $4.99
Trader Joe’s $3.49

Organic Frozen Strawberries
Whole Foods 365 $2.99
Trader Joe’s $2.69

Organic Boneless, Skinless Chicken Breasts
Whole Foods 365 $7.99
Trader Joe’s $7.49

Organic Milk
Whole Foods 365 $6.99
Trader Joe’s $5.99

Which is better: Whole Foods or Trader Joe's?

Produce was difficult to compare. Trader Joe’s prices are per piece of fruit. Whole Foods is by the pound. It’s hard to compare since I don’t have the weight of the produce I bought at Trader Joe’s.

I bought 5 bananas, 4 apples, and 4 oranges at each store so I included the total I paid.

Bananas
Whole Foods 365 $0.69/lb. I paid $1.09/5
Trader Joe’s $0.19 ea. I paid $0.95

Oranges
Whole Foods 365 $0.78/lb. I paid $1.64
Trader Joe’s $0.59 ea. I paid $2.36

Apples
Whole Foods 365 $1.68/lb. I paid $2.28/4
Trader Joe’s $0.79 ea. I paid $3.16/4

My Whole Foods bill came to $51.22. My Trader Joe’s bill came to $51.27.

I paid ALMOST THE SAME!

Now if I was just running in for milk and eggs, I’d pick Trader Joe’s every time and be a $1.30 richer. But those gains would almost all be lost if I picked up 4 apples for lunches.

I’ll admit I expected Trader Joe’s to offer significant savings. However, on these items, it simply wasn’t the case.

20 of the Best Healthy Trader Joe’s Snacks

Best Healthy Snacks at Trader Joes

This list of 20 of the Best Healthy Trader Joe’s Snacks does not include Cookie Butter.

In my perfect world, a spoonful of cookie butter would be instantly slimming and nutritionally complete.

Sadly, it’s not so.

The good news is, cookie butter is just one of the many snacking options available at Trader Joe’s. And my list of 20 has some really tasty treats that will make you walk right past that cookie butter and not even miss it.

I didn’t include the produce section in this list. That seemed like a no-brainer to me. We know that picking up an apple or a bag of carrots makes for the best of healthy snacks.

This list is for those who need healthy and tasty snack inspiration.

DRIED FRUITS AND NUTS:

1. Medjool Dates – Craving caramel? Try a date instead.

2. Freeze Dried Bananas – If your blood sugar is running low, pop open a bag of these for instant happiness. BONUS: These won’t squish in your purse like a real banana will.

3. Freeze Dried Fuji Apple Slices – I love the crunchy sweetness of these. They don’t last long in our house and often times we have to have arm wrestling matches to determine who gets the last bit.

4. Just Mango (unsulfered and unsweetened) – Perfect in homemade trail mix. Perfect enjoyed on it’s own. Another great healthy snack when you need something sweet.

5. Raw Almonds – When I asked on Facebook what snack my readers carried in their purse, almonds was the number one answer. BONUS: Trader Joe’s almonds aren’t sprayed with PPO.

6. Raw Cashews – Raw cashews are an easy snack that also deserve a spot in your purse/diaper bag/gym bag.

7. Tamari Roasted Almonds -When a plain almond just won’t do. An 1/8 cup has less than 100 calories and no sugar. But the flavor is to die for.

organic-light-string-cheese

REFRIGERATED:

8. Cold Pressed Juices – 100% fruits and vegetables. The price is steep, but the nutritional value is deep.

9. Cage-Free Fresh Hard-Cooked Peeled Eggs – If you get discouraged peeling a hard boiled egg (half the egg ends up in the sink), this is one convenience food that is worth every single penny.

10. Maple Water – Did you know that sometimes thirst is mistaken for hunger? Try drinking more instead of eating more. Maple water has half the calories and half the sugar of coconut water!

11. Organic Light String Cheese – Classic snacking. Do you like to peel off strings?

12. Mediterranean Hummus Snack Pack – Perfect for lunch boxes with carrots and baked lentil chips.

13. Trader Joe’s Plain Organic Yogurt – Plain yogurt is kinda tart and maybe yucky. Stir in some fruit and nuts and you’ll have a yummy snack where you control the sugar content.

seasoned-kale-chips

PACKAGED

14. Seasoned Kale Chips – I’m addicted to the seasoning on these. Note: there is added sugar but only 2 grams.

15. Roasted Seaweed Snacks – These are naturally rich in minerals, slightly crunchy and totally satisfying when you need a salty snack fix.

16. Baked Lentil Chips – Perfect for dipping in hummus.

17. Organic Peanut Butter – Because a spoonful of peanut butter is definitely considered a snack in our house. Add some chocolate pieces and you’ve got the perfect mid-afternoon slump snack.
BTW ~ You’ll want to check out Which is Better: Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s to see the price comparison on peanut butter and more.

18. Organic Popping Corn – Corn is one of the most genetically modified crops in the world. Organic popping corn is a total win.

19. Organic Applesauce Cups – No added sugar in these delicious little cups!

20. Roasted Coconut Chips – When referring to these chips, the words “obsessed” and “addictive” are often used.

BONUS

Have a pup in your life? The price on their dog treats, or “snacks” can’t be beat!

Now it is your turn. What did I miss that needs to find it’s way into my cart next time?
