Agua de Pepino

A glass full of an icy beverage hits the spot on a hot day. The Americas, specifically Mexico and Central America, are famous for their “Aguas Frescas” (fresh waters). These cool and refreshing drinks are water blended with fruits, vegetables, grains or flowers, sweetened with sugar. You can stop at almost any taqueria in Mexico for a carne asada taco and buy a cup of Agua de Jamaica (Hibiscus) and  Agua de Horchata (Rice and Cinnamon). Then there are the less common ones, like Agua de Melon (Cantaloupe), Agua de Sandia (Watermelon) and Agua de Pepino (Cucumber).

Today I want to introduce you to Agua de Pepino, a cool and refreshing drink flavored with cucumber and lime juice. Unlike the traditional version that is loaded with cane sugar, this twist is sweetened with just a touch of raw honey. For those of you that think drinking cucumber is weird  ~ just try it! You’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Agua de Pepino is the perfect pick me up when you want to sip on something that is refreshing and  just a bit sweet!

Agua de Pepino

1  english cucumber, peeled
¼ cup raw honey
¼ cup lime juice. freshly squeezed
6 cups of water

  1. Peel the cucumber.
  2. Quarter the cucumber and place in a blender.
  3. Add the lime juice, raw honey and water.
  4. Blend on high for 2 minutes are until smooth.
  5. Strain though a fine mesh colander or cheese cloth to remove the plulp.
  6. Put in the fridge until completely chilled or serve over ice.
