GBG List of 3: Yoga with Adriene, Eco Hairspray, Toy Upcycle

List of 3

The GBG List of 3: Three things I love, Three things I want to share!

How were your holidays?

We had an amazing time. I loved having my daughter home from college.

As one of her Christmas gifts, my mom gave her my old typewriter. Over 20 years later, and it still works!

We had a great time trying to figure out the ribbon, learning you can’t just backspace to correct something, and marveling at the¬†loud humming and clacking of the keys. Can I just tell you how glad I am we now have laptops?

Payton and her typewriter

She’s now safely back at school and I’m finding we are returning to our daily routines. So I’m back to the List of Three!

Here we go:

Yoga with Adriene

Andrea The Natural Green Mom Doing Yoga with Adriene
Can you see my workout buddy? She was checking on my form. ūüėČ

One of my goals for 2016 is to practice yoga regularly. So I want to introduce you to my new BFF Adriene.

I was introduced to her YouTube channel by friends, but I had put off trying her classes. However, after I recently showed up for a 6:30 am yoga class… only to find out it started at 6:00 am … I ran right home to give her channel a try.

My friends were so right! You can find an at home yoga class for any level on her channel. Plus, you can pause and work on those poses that are giving you trouble instead of having to try to keep up with the rest of the class. ALL FOR FREE on YouTube!!!!

It doesn’t require a lot of room, just a yoga mat. No need to show up for a class at a certain time, you can take a class when it is convenient for you.

Did I mention it’s FREE?

Warning, your dogs may lick your face while you are lying on your mat. And, while you are lying on the floor, you may discover you haven’t vacuumed under the couch in a while.

I have yet to do her Yoga for Bedtime video, but my friends have raved about it. If you’ve been wanting to add yoga to your life, give this a try and tell me if you like it as much as I do!

DIY Dinosaur Planters

dinosaur succulent planters

I love a good upcycle project! I have a whole Pinterest board devoted to upcycling.

Isn’t this upcycle project for dinosaur succulent planters crazy cute???

I’ve held on to a few dinosaur toys since I have younger nephews. But I might just have to snatch them for this project! They make me smile. They would be so fun in a boys room. I think I’ll make them as a conversation piece for my outdoor dining table.

LA Hold Hair Spritz

la hold hair spritz

Ugh. I have a total love-hate relationship with my bangs.

Love that they cover my forehead, hate how they never stay where I want them to. My bangs have a mind of their own!

Recently, while I was in the natural grocers, I saw a travel size bottle of this LA Hold Hair Spritz.

It was small and it was cheap so it came home with me.

It delivers on the holding power! It’s been a long time since I have used a hairspray, but I can give this one a two-thumbs up recommend.

Anyone who knows me knows I am an EXPERT in going to bed early. I go to bed faithfully by 9:00 every night. Crazy, right? While I might be an early to bed kinda gal, I know that there are many of you who struggle with getting to bed at a decent hour. If that’s you, you may want to join the Go To Bed Challenge.

What’s making your list this week?

Small Space Exercise Room Ideas

Have a small space exercise room? Here’s how I’ve set up mine!
Small Space Exercise Room Ideas

Do you own home exercise equipment? Where is it right now?

Ours is in a small space that used to be an entry way. Only now it’s not. It’s an odd shaped bump out that had no purpose.

In this random space that can’t hold any real furniture, we have set up a small exercise room.

Small Space Exercise Room

As you can see, we have quite a bit of home exercise equipment.

I have a total love/hate relationship with our Concept 2 Rower. This was purchased during our Crossfit stage. (We are no longer Crossfitters. Torn rotator cuff, pure hatred of burpees. Nuff said.)

The rower is a great workout and I do jump on there on days when I do my cardio at home.

But storing a rower is a whole other animal. These suckers tend to take up far more room than a treadmill because of their length. So please keep that in mind if you ever decide to purchase one!

We keep ours up against the wall, then maneuver it forward when we want to use it.

On the opposite wall we keep one barbell and a few plates. We’ve found it adequate for doing at home workouts. We’re not exactly throwing the weight around inside our own home, ya feel me?

Utlizing a small exercise space

In the back of the space we had room for a console table. This has worked out great!

On top of the table I keep a bottle filled with water, a few towels for mopping up sweat and wiping down equipment, and a plant to make it look homey.

Below the table I keep our exercise ball and a wicker basket with rollers, ab mats and yoga mats. It helps corral all that extra equipment.

In the drawer to the console table, I store quite a few things that makes this a happy exercise space.

Storing small exercise room equipment

Whenever I get a health or exercise magazine with an at-home workout plan, I tear out the pages and file them in this drawer. Then, if I have a leg day, I’ll look through the files and find one I want to do.

Next, I keep my heart rate monitor in this drawer. Do you use a heart rate monitor? I am HIGHLY motivated by watching how many calories I burn.

I also keep yoga mat cleaning spray, ear buds (I can’t hear my music over¬†the rower), a small stand for holding my phone¬†(best $8 I’ve ever spent!) to play music when lifting weights, a tennis ball for rolling any really tight muscles, and the pump for my exercise ball.

This small space exercise room actually holds quite a bit of equipment and works for days when getting outdoors or to the gym simply isn’t an option.

So that’s our exercise room!

What small space exercise room ideas have you found that work?

All Natural Copycat Satin Hands Recipe

This copycat satin hands recipe needs only 3 all natural ingredients.
All Natural Copycat Satin Hands Recipe. You'll have super soft hands after using this scrub.

When I was growing up, my mom always used Mary Kay.

Her Mary Kay consultant would come to the house, set up her little pink mirrors and let us play in the make-up.

One of my favorite parts of the Mary Kay lady visiting our house was getting to do the satin hands treatment.

I loved using the sweet smelling scrub. There is something luxurious in treating your hands to a soft scrub.

Why wouldn’t there be? Our hands work hard all day. They deserve pampering.

I wanted to be able to do Satin Hands again.

But here’s the deal: I support Mary Kay’s mission of helping women have a home based business. However, I don’t support Mary Kay’s actual products.

Mary Kay has not joined the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics and continues to use products like parabens in their formulations.

So I started looking for a copycat satin hands recipe.

Unfortunately, most of the recipes I found on Pinterest call for the use of Dawn Hand Renewal Dishwashing Liquid.

I looked up Dawn Hand Renewal in the EWG database and found they get a D for safe ingredients.

GAH! That’s when I decided to make a copycat satin hands recipe out of ingredients I know are safe.

Here’s what I came up with:

All Natural Ingredients for making a copycat satin hands recipe

Copycat Satin Hands Recipe

Liquid castile soap
Vegetable glycerin (optional but this is what your are looking for)
Vitamin E (optional but here’s my favorite)

Find a glass jar with a lid wide enough to fit your hand inside. You need to be able to scoop out some of the satin hands easily.

Next, add about 3/4 cup sugar to the jar. In a measuring cup, measure 1/4 cup castile soap. With a fork, whisk in 1 tablespoon vegetable glycerin and 1/2 teaspoon vitamin E.

Vegetable glycerin will help your mixture to lather better. It also is a nice moisturizer. If you don’t have vegetable glycerin, you may leave it out.

Vitamin E is good for your skin and it works as a preservative. Again, you may leave it out.

Stir the soap/glycerin mixture into the sugar.

All Natural Copycat Satin Hands

Try washing your hands with the mixture. Evaluate for yourself: Do I want more scrubbing? Add sugar. Too harsh for your sensitive hands? Add a little more soap.

I like my mixture runny. Too much sugar just doesn’t feel good on my hands.

Finally, a word about scents. If you enjoy a certain scent of castile soap, use that. But if you prefer to play with your scent, buy unscented castile soap and add essential oils.

Do you have a favorite castile soap scent? Or, can you recommend a great essential oil combination? Let us know in the comments!

DIY Healthy Whole Wheat Dog Treats Recipe

A fun recipe for Whole Wheat Dog Treats.

An easy DIY: Homemade Whole Wheat Dog Treats Recipe. Only three ingredients.

I have a confession to make. I do not enjoy rolling out dough.

My mom always made roll out sugar cookies with my girls because I just didn’t think they were worth the hassle. (Thank goodness for moms with patience, yes?)

So I’ll admit it is a wee bit odd¬†that the time I decide to make cut out “cookies” it’s for my dogs!

You see, I’ve had a dog bone shaped cookie cutter in my drawer for forever.

It was time.

I either needed to use that cookie cutter, or it needed to find a new home.

After a recipe for homemade dog treats came up in my Pinterest stream (oh Pinterest!), I pulled out the cookie cutter and decided to bake for my dogs.

It helped that the recipe only has three ingredients.

To make the treats healthier, I used whole wheat flour. Gotta spread the healthy whole wheat flour love to all my kids – two and four legged.

whole wheat dog treats

PEOPLE! This dough is AWESOME for rolling.

I used two pieces of parchment paper and rolled it out between them. I’d say I rolled the dough to about 1/4 inch thick.

Then I cut out the bones AND THEY DIDN’T STICK OR TEAR! Cue the heavenly angels singing.

Check out how easy this recipe is to make. And oh by the way, these treats cost a fraction of what purchasing dog treats at the store does!

Whole Wheat Dog Treats

  • 2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 4 ounce jar organic carrot baby food
  • 2 eggs

  1. Preheat oven to 350.
  2. Combine flour, carrot puree, and eggs in mixer bowl. Mix on medium speed until a crumbly mixture forms.
  3. Add water 1 tablespoon at a time or until the mixture becomes soft and sticky.
  4. Roll dough between two sheets parchment paper. Cut out with small cookie cutter.
  5. Transfer cookie cut outs to a greased baking sheet. Bake for 25 minutes.
  6. Allow to cool before serving.

Dogs getting treats

My dogs didn’t even know these whole wheat dog treats were healthy. They loved them.

Since publishing this post, we’ve expanded our family. Meet Wilson! You can follow this blue eyed blonde on Instagram!

It looks like I’m keeping the dog bone cookie cutter!¬†

20 Fun Ways to Upcycle Honey Bottles

I love to buy my honey in the cute little bear shaped bottles.

But, with as much honey as we use (love it in hot tea!), it makes sense to buy a bigger bottle. So I’ve actually taken to buying a jug of honey and using it to refill the same bear. And yes, that is a sticky project!

However, once I started seeing all the cute honey bottle upcycle ideas on Pinterest, I decided I need to buy more honey bears!

Natural Dog Eye Drops

Natural Dog Eye Drops can be easily made and administered at home.
Natural Dog Eye Drops

Do you have a dog that loves to hang it’s head out the window while riding in the car? ME TOO!

What about a dog with long fur around it’s face where hair gets stuck on their eye and you can see it floating? ME TOO!

These are only two instances where you made need to use natural dog eye drops to flush irritants and debris out of your dog’s eyes.

Of course, it is important to always exercise extra care when treating your dog at home. If you don’t feel confident that using eye drops is the solution to your dog’s problem, be sure to seek the guidance of your vet.

However, if you can see that what is upsetting your dog is something floating in it’s eye, give these drops a try. It could save you hundreds (literally!) on vet bills.

Natural Dog Eye Drops Recipe

  • Dissolve 1/4 teaspoon sea salt in 1 cup purified water.
  • Keep this mixture at room temperature.
  • Use a saturated cotton ball to squeeze liquid into the eye, or use an eye dropper.
  • Use enough liquid to properly flush eye.

I never have an eye dropper at home. I just don’t keep one in my cabinet. (Maybe I should???)

So I’ve found soaking a cotton ball and squeezing it over the eye to be effective.

Please make sure you don’t actually touch the eye. You want to keep the drops sterile.

As an alternative to making your own at home, I can recommend Only Natural Pet’s Eye Care.

Natural Pet Eye Drops

However, if you take a look at the ingredients, you’ll find it is basically the same ingredients as the homemade solution.
